Well, except maybe a half a dozen good friends sharing several of their favorite books! In an effort to battle the loneliness that comes with living in a new city and being married to someone who travels for a living, I have found refuge in a small group of women who all share a passion for good literature. Except in this group, the term “literature” is defined loosely to include the fabulous genre of trashy chick-lit.
Nothing is better than a good friend and a good book club….
Here’s the story, we started out reading “The Story of Edgar Sawtelle” and about bored ourselves to death. That’s when we decided our book club should be more of an escape than a chore, changing the reading list to inculde dirty romance novels, and renaming ourselves the Dirty Book Club (DBC). It’s funny how words like “loins” and “ravaged” can inspire such endless, in-depth conversations! Throw in the bottles of wine, the tasty snacks, and lots of gossip, and I’ve got free therapy sessions once a month. Sometimes we do find 15 minutes or so to actually discuss the books too, which is an added bonus. And the reading isn’t always mindless. This month, for example, we are delving into a piece of literary genius- Emily Bronte’s classic, Wuthering Heights. It’s definitely a challenging read so far, but one I’m happy to tackle. And with each book we complete, the DBC continues to evolve. We are hoping to hold a meeting at the Hustler store in Hollywood, for example. We also plan to attend high tea, ridiculous dresses included. It’s been so refreshing to find this group of ladies after my own heart…thanks to them I feel more at home in this crazy city!
